LOOK INTO THE TOP by Victoria Cappuccio

Topshop, London’s distinctively popular retail store housed in the center of the United Kingdom’s fashion mecca on High Street; was cultivated nearly 46 years ago beginning as a small department within Sheffield’s Peter Robinson store. Shortly after securing an increasing customer base the label expanded to Peter Robinson’s on Oxford Street. In 1974 Arcadia Marketing Group made the decision to launch Topshop as an independent business with a youthful target market of males and females between the ages thirteen and twenty-five.

In 1992 the rapidly growing brand expanded into its present building on 214 Oxford Street in London. Within the last decade Topshop has gone on to become sponsors of graduate fashion week and New Generation at London Fashion Week. The company also began to offer door-to door styling, and in house personal shopping and salon services. Topshop has also been recognized during London’s fashion week as one of High Street’s first brands featured on the runway. More recently, since 2007 Topshop and Kate Moss have been working together to form a series of intriguing clothing collaborations designed by the model.

With ten wildly successful collections the Spring-Summer 2010, debuting summer of 2010, is highly anticipated by both consumers and the fashion community alike. In her past ventures with Topshop she transitioned from classic wardrobe essentials to feminine tailored dresses, dabbled in prints and ruffles, and ended 2009 with sparkling details and Asian inspirations. Kate has stated," I have loved working with Topshop, they have given me complete creative freedom throughout the process."(1)

Kate’s designs contain a classic silhouette with modern details easy for any girl to pull off.  I absolutely love her line from 2008 and can relate to the masses of young women that flooded the store for the anticipated 2007 opening. I feel her clothes are the kind that can transition easily from day to evening with the change of a few accessories. One of my favorite looks are the sweater dresses paired with opaque black tights which can be worn as several styles and are well paired with flats and heels alike. The clothing is always in step with today’s trends, and combines the quality of an expensive line with the customers budget in mind.

We can expect more of this season's reconstructed styles polished with Moss's enchanting point of view. Her experience in the industry has given her an edge when designing, which produces garments that drape fluidly and wrap delicately around the female figure. Aside from the focus on construction, Kate's attention to detail within the patterns and colors is impeccable for this high street fashion house. Anticipation is building as the collection arrives in stores early this summer.
