Elizabeth Azadi
SJFW Fashion Writer | Designer
I never understood the importance of happiness through the pursuit of passion until I started studying Fashion Design at the Art Institute of New York City. It was the most liberating experience of my life. My name is Elizabeth Azadi and I’m now a fashion designer in New York City working on my own clothing line, “Elizabeth Azadi”.
After graduating high school I came to that inevitable fork in the road…the age-old question of “What do I want to be when I grow up?” Unfortunately at the time my father had already answered that question for me. The next 7 years I threw my every ounce of energy in a major that had me impassively working towards getting my Bachelor’s of Science in Construction Management. I eventually graduated and started working in construction as a project engineer with men three times my senior and twice my size. Even though the education & work experience forced me to mature at a faster rate than your average college graduate, I somehow felt empty and unfulfilled. After deciding that enough is enough and believing that my “God chosen” path was to follow my heart…I embarked on a journey across country from the Sunshine State to the Big Apple to find my true calling in life.
One morning over a cup of coffee with extra cream and the company of my wise and fearless older sister Izabell, I returned to that daunting question of, “What do I want to be when I grow up?” She simply looked at me with a mystified look and said, “what makes you happy in life?” The first words that subconsciously crossed my lips were, “fashion design” and since then I’ve never looked back. Everyday I wake up knowing that I’ve finally found myself and that I’m truly blessed that I get to pursue my goals and dreams of becoming a world-renowned fashion designer. I’ve learned that in life there are no short cuts to long lasting happiness, so for all those people that hit that fork in the road…my suggestion is that you allow your heart to choose your path in life. It may not be the shortest or the smoothest ride but at least you know that where you’re heading is somewhere beautiful.
