Liza Atamy
SJFW Fashion Writer
My name is Liza Atamy and I am a freelance journalist, and fashion writer for San Jose Fashion Week.
I was elegantly shy growing up. I would quietly contemplate the words of Rumi and Whitman, all the while, scour through the latest Vogue to catch a glimpse of Christy Turlington and Bridget Hall, donning the latest pieces by Chanel, Gucci and Valentino. I was overwhelmed by the intricacy of poems and designs, and how their beauty could capture the very essence of my reflections.
Poetry and fashion were never acquired tastes for me; I was born with a passion in my very soul for both, and it shone through how naturally they were so much a part of my life. I expressed myself fully with my writing; it was and still is my fortress. Likewise for fashion, putting together an ensemble was always second nature to me; it was a part of my personality, my emotions and my spirit.
I discovered my passion for journalism when I presented my story of my grandmother in front of an audience of teachers and fellow classmates in the sixth grade. I found the experience exhilarating! My teacher was so moved by my piece, she forwarded my story to the Whitestone Times, and it was published. It was in that moment I knew...
I recently graduated with a B.S. in Journalism and have gained experience in an array of mediums. I was a staff writer for San Jose State’s Spartan Daily newspaper and managing editor for Access Magazine. I was also the Arts & Entertainment writer for the Pioneer.
Furthermore, I completed a highly competitive internship at CNN International, where I worked for Senior Editor of Middle East Affairs, Octavia Nasr.
My most savored experience thus far, was going to Prague, CZ to complete a foreign correspondent training program. Traveling outside of my realm of comfort and familiarity pushed my goals and expectations to a higher, more challenging level.
I leave you with words that have been one of my most cherished verbal accessories:
“THIS is thy hour O soul, thy free flight into the wordless,
Away from books, away from art, the day erased, the lesson done,
Thee fully forth emerging, silent, gazing, pondering the themes thou lovest best:
Night, sleep, death and the stars.” –Walt Whitman
